Let’s Craft NI is delighted to launch a new mindfulness course for 2021 – paper mosaics! Paper mosaics crafting is trending for adults, particularly as a way to encourage creativity during lockdown. It’s great for all ages and abilities, and requires only a few items to get started, such as PVA glue and small pieces of paper. The mosaic affect can be created using a variety of textured and smooth papers, as well as through recycling, for example, using magazines, and other papers from around the house. How does paper mosaics encourage mindfulness? Mindfulness is a pretty wonderful thing. It can reduce stress and anxiety, and generally help us to maintain our mental wellness. Research from the British Journal of Occupational Therapy suggests doing crafting activities on a regular basis can improve mood and increase feelings of relaxation. Paper mosaics is a great mindful crafting activity, which enables us to slow down, enjoy working with our hands, and create something visual. When we take part in crafting like paper mosaics, we let images, shapes, colours, and our intuition, lead us in different directions. We begin to slow down and notice things around us – sights, sounds, and the way we are feeling. The activity and the 'quiet space' for crafting can help us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings as they happen moment to moment. We begin to become more mindful as we get caught up in the craft.
Let's Craft NI offers a range of crafting programmes for groups, which support positive mental health and mindfulness, whilst encouraging creativity and lifelong learning. These programmes are aligned with the recommended 5 Steps to Positive Mental Health. More on mindful crafting activities can be read in an article by Kat Nicholls.
